The 2017 Pino was cropped from an early and low-yielding year when the wine achieved 13% alcohol from the grapes from one hectare of 40-year-old Bobal vines planted at 800 meters in altitude on limestone-rich soils that tend to produce very tasty, almost salty wines. It fermented with 100% stems and indigenous yeasts in 4,500-liter oak vats and finished fermentation and underwent 11 months of aging in 600-liter French oak barrels. Here, they look for a more serious expression of Bobal, from a vineyard that is among their youngest on very rocky and poor limestone soils that give a different profile to the wine, with power but with more finesse than the P.F., with contained power. The palate is tremendously mineral, with a strong chalky sensation and a tasty, somewhat salty finish. 1,800 bottles were filled in August 2018.
This edition of Pino is a full and structured one with plenty of ripe dark-cherry and blueberry aromas, framed in minerals and pastry-like notes. The palate has such sleek delivery of fine tannins and a long, juicy and dense, blue-fruit finish. Drink or hold.
