The white 2021 Challao Blanco was produced with 60% Viura, 20% Garnacha Blanca, 10% Malvasía and the rest Palomino and Calagraño from the Saúco vineyard on the way to Briñas in the west of Labastida on sandy and limestone soils. It achieved very good ripeness and reached 14% alcohol, while keeping good freshness reflected by the pH of 3.3. It comes from a sloped vineyard close to Briñas that was planted in 1990. The whole clusters were pressed and the juice let to settle before fermenting in 500-liter barrels, where it matured for 20 months. It has strong notes of pollen, dry flowers and beeswax and a vertical palate with sharp flavors and a very tasty, almost salty finish but already polished from the time in bottle. It was a year with a longer cycle, with full ripeness and development of aromas and flavors in the grapes, and the wines have power and depth, keeping the elegance and freshness. The red grapes from the same vineyard contribute to the Angelita blend. Only 600 bottles, 25 magnums and 10 double magnums were filled in November 2023. (Luis Guitérrez)
