Descripción

La pasión de Dirk Niepoort por la variedad Baga y el fantástico terruño de la región de Bairrada le llevó a buscar pequeñas parcelas en viñas muy viejas repartidas por la región de Cantanhede durante los últimos años. Estos vinos se caracterizan por ser ligeros de color y en alcohol, elegantes y finos y con un enorme potencial de envejecimiento. El Lagar de Baixo tinto es el resultado resultado de la combinación de viñas muy viejas y viñas más jóvenes: complejo, serio, pero con cierta juventud y garra.

Vista
Color brillante y abierto con algunas notas violáceas.
Nariz
Tiene matices florales y hierbas aromáticas, notas de cereza y granada. El envejecimiento en barrica complementa el perfil con recuerdos especiados como las vainas de vainilla.

Boca
Es redondo, muy pulido y elegante, sin dejar de lado la concentración y la frescura. Final largo y persistente.

Temperatura de servicio
Se recomienda servir a 16 ºC.
Maridaje
Platos de caza (perdiz, jabalí), 'feijoada', bacalao asado y legumbres (judías rojas, lentejas).

Viñedos plantados entre 80 y 100 metros de altitud.

Vinificación
Fermentación en lagares abiertos de acero inoxidable durante 4 semanas y completó su proceso en tanques de 2.500 litros. En estos mismos tanques tuvo lugar la maloláctica.
Envejecimiento
Crianza de 19 meses en barricas de roble usadas de 2.500 litros.
Embotellado
Sin filtrar ni clarificar.

James Suckling:

This Lagar de Baixo, the entry-level wine that Niepoort makes in Bairrada, opens up with blackberries, violets, stones and a subtle earthy note. The palate is medium-bodied and really supple, with silky tannins, tender fruit and an ethereal finish. Drink now or hold.

The Wine Advocate:

The 2021 Lagar de Baixo has around 30% grapes from producers and the rest from their property and, hence, is not certified organic like the other wines from their own vineyards. They had a heat wave in July and August and only about four days of rain during the harvest, which is a problem; because the Baga skin is quite thin and the bunches are tight, the skins can burst and botrytis appears. So, the harvest in Bairrada has to be "surgical," as winemaker Sergio told me. They managed to get good fruit by sorting and selecting. The destemmed grapes fermented in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts, and the wine matured in 2,500-liter oak vats for 22 months. It has a pale, translucent ruby color that is clean and bright. It's easy to drink and has fine tannins, without the concentration and tannins of the older vines (but this comes from vines of around 40 years of age) and has the chalkiness of the limestone soils. It makes you salivate and want to drink more. It has 12% alcohol, vibrant freshness and purity of flavors. 30,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in November 2023.
