Espanillo is in the very north of Bierzo and this vineyard is grown at 700m on slate and sandy soils. A blend of mostly Mencía with some Garnacha Tintorera and Godello, the wine was aged for 11 months in foudres. The wine combines impressive structure with a plush core of red berry fruit and spice, lifted by a stony vibrancy. It is a wine that is very much anchored in its cool, mountain surrounds while offering generous and appealing fruit. 2025-2032.
This shows bright red cherries with a subtle herbal lift and great clarity of fruit. The medium-bodied palate is precise and focused, with fine tannins that add an edge. From Sancho Martin, a vineyard planted by winemaker Gregory Perez, which includes significant proportions of merenzao, garnacha tintorera and some white varieties.
I once again tasted the 2022 Mencía de Espanillo, which was produced with approximately 85% Mencía, 15% Garnacha Tintorera and a little Godello from old vines in the village of Espanillo at 700 meters in altitude, where the soils are decomposed slate. It fermented in a 5,000-liter oak vat and matured in an oak foudre for 16 months. It has 13.5% alcohol and very good freshness and acidity, showing balance and seriousness. It's aging at a slow pace with harmony and elegance. It has a medium-bodied palate, and the tannins are being polished by time in the bottle. 4,000 bottles were filled in January 2024.
