Descripción

La añada 2021 de este mito ha sido catalogada por la bodega como equilibrada y compleja, de gran calidad y con un gran potencial de envejecimiento, fiel reflejo del espectacular terroir de Château Angélus. Una cosecha que no pasará a la historia por su nivel de producción, debido a una drástica tarea de selección para cosechar solo las mejores uvas. Un grandísimo burdeos Premier Grand Cru Classé A a la altura de su leyenda.

Nariz
Discreta al comienzo, se abre para mostrar aromas sutiles y complejos. Destacan las notas de frutos rojos y los matices florales y especiados.

Viñedo y elaboración

Descripción
Las viñas se ubican en un anfiteatro natural dentro de una ladera orientada al sur en Saint Émilion.

39 años de media.
Suelo
De arcilla y piedra caliza en la parte superior; y de arcilla, arena y piedra caliza a medida que desciende la pendiente.
Clima
Esta añada destaca por un invierno suave y lluvioso, con varios brotes de mildiu durante la primavera. El verano tardó en llegar, pero desde agosto las condiciones hasta la vendimia fueron muy favorables.
Cosecha
La vendimia del Merlot se llevó a cabo el 20 de septiembre y la del Cabernet sauvignon a comienzos de octubre.
Vinificación
En tanques de roble y acero inoxidable para la Merlot y en depósitos de hormigón para la Cabernet franc. La fermentación alcohólica tuvo lugar a una temperatura de hasta 28 ºC. Maceración posterior a la fermentación a entre 28-30 ºC entre 1 y 3 semanas.
Envejecimiento
Crianza de 22 meses. El Merlot y una parte del Cabernet franc en barricas nuevas de roble francés de grano fino y el resto del Cabernet en fudres de 30 hectolitros.

James Suckling:

This is so delicious, with lovely focused cherries, flowers, dried sandalwood and some Indian spices. Medium-bodied with fine tannins and just a touch of wood to the pure fruit and a subtle and refined finish. 40% merlot and 60% cabernet franc, the most cab franc in a long time.

The 2021 Château Angélus is based on 60% Cabernet Franc and 40% Merlot brought up all in new oak, with 50% of the Cabernet Franc in foudre. It has a gorgeous perfume of black raspberries, wildflowers, darker cherries, graphite, and lead pencil that evolves beautifully with time in the glass. Medium-bodied, elegant, and all about finesse and refinement, it has perfectly integrated oak, ultra-fine tannins, and outstanding length. The harvest here spanned from September 17 to October 2, and it hit 13.5% alcohol and 3.65 pH.

The Wine Advocate:

The 2021 Angélus unwinds in the glass to reveal aromas of dark berries, plums and cherries mingled with rose petals, forest floor, spices and pencil shavings, framed by creamy new oak. Medium to full-bodied, layered and vibrant, it's taut and structured, with a deep core of fruit, chalky tannins and a long, perfumed, vanillin-inflected finish. As readers will remember, it's a blend of fully 60% Cabernet Franc with 40% Merlot, incorporating foudres in addition to 225-liter barriques, and the rich, toasty oak signature of yesteryear is now firmly in the background, even if the wine still carries a youthful patina. The 2021's classically balanced profile will reward a bit of bottle age.

Decanter:

Herbal edged raspberries on the nose, smells floral, lifted and softly savoury too. Clean and clear, a lovely punchy energy straight away offset by high, mouth-watering acidity. Sleek and pure, slightly tangy with red summer berries, some bitter orange elements and an undertone of salty minerality which lingers on the finish. Very likeable and easy to drink. Great tannins and hit of mint at the end. Drink straight away. Why wait.
