Descripción

Alión es el "hijo" pequeño de Vega Sicilia, aunque se elabora en una bodega independiente. Con cada añada va ganando seguidores siendo ya un imprescindible entre los grandes tintos españoles. Fruto de un mosaico de viñedos y personalidades, representa la compleja expresión de la diversidad de Ribera del Duero. La añada 2022 supuso un reto por su tiempo seco y cálido, aún así el vino preserva su frescura y jugosidad frutal y se muestra redondo, excelentemente equilibrado y suave en boca.  

Aquí presentado en formato de 1,5 litros.

Viñedo y elaboración

Descripción
Viñedos plantados a una altitud de 750 metros sobre el nivel del mar en distintos municipios de Valladolid, Burgos, Soria y Segovia, desde las zonas limítrofes al este de la denominación (Soria) hasta el extremo oeste (finca Vega Sicilia en Valbuena de Duero). El marco de plantación es de 2.200 plantas por hectárea.

Cepas de una media de 40 años.
Suelo
Con buen drenaje, profundos, con alternancia de materiales gruesos y finos junto a gravas cuarcíticas que arrastró el Duero.
Vinificación
Para preservar la frescura del vino se apostó por una vinificación más suave y un uso más cuidadoso del roble, empleando mayores volúmenes y otros materiales como el hormigón a fin de domar una añada potente y cálida.
Embotellado
En mayo de 2024.

Opinión de los críticos

The Wine Advocate:

The Alión vintage released in 2026 is the 2022 Alión, a year they consider a challenge, a warm and dry year when ripeness didn't follow the usual pattern: late vineyards ripened earlier and early vineyards took longer this year. Their obsession was to keep the freshness in the wine, and they did a softer vinification and a more careful use of oak, using larger volumes and other materials like concrete to tame a powerful and solar vintage. The nose is serious and even has some austerity. The wine is obviously juicier and rounder, with 14.5% alcohol, a pH of 3.89 and 4.58 grams of acidity, but has very good overall balance. The tannins are round, polished and slightly dustier than other vintages, the wine has a tender mouthfeel. A total of 270,870 bottles, 7,040 magnums and some larger formats were produced. It was bottled in May 2024. (Luis Gutiérrez)

Tim Atkin:

Alíon is very much a pan-Ribera red, based on grapes from Moradillo, with other components from Padilla, Pesquera, Peñaranda, Villálvaro and the Vega Sicilia estate. Gonzalo Iturriaga used only 70% new wood in 2022 because of the concentration of the vintage, producing a Tempranillo that's appealingly refined and floral, all subtle aromatic spices, bramble and summer berry flavours and a focused finish. 2027-33. 

James Suckling:

A structured and chewy wine from this challenging hot, dry year. On the nose it is profound and floral at the same time, with graphite, blackberries and dark chocolate. Full-bodied and tightly wound. Give it two or three more years. Drink from 2027. (Zekun Shuai)
