The 2021 Izar-Leku is an atypical Txakoli from Getaria, as the style is quite different from the traditional wines from the appellation. It's a proper refermented sparkling wine that spent 30 months in bottle with lees before it was disgorged. It has a straightforward nose with notes of herbs, flowers and fruit and abundant bubbles. It doesn't seem to have the finesse of other vintages, which was a bit surprising, because theoretically, it could have been the best of the three vintages—2020, 2021 and 2022—I tasted together. The autumn was exceptionally wet, with historic rainfall levels in December, followed by a contrasting winter that featured a very cold January but an overall warm season. However, a notably dry spring and summer compensated for the early rainfall, resulting in a warm year overall with below-average total precipitation of around 1,150 liters in Getaria. This year, they used up to 8% Hondarrabi Beltza red grapes, and the wine was disgorged after 29 months in bottle with the lees. 13,000 bottles produced. It was disgorged in February 2025.
