Contundente, fresca, con un ataque eléctrico y una energía ácida. Sus taninos son sedosos y su expresión pura. Compacta, rotunda y vertical.

Clima
El ciclo vegetativo de la añada 2023 comenzó con un invierno seco, que dio paso a una primavera con importantes variaciones térmicas y escasas precipitaciones. El desarrollo vegetativo se llevó a cabo en perfectas condiciones, ya que las temperaturas fueron propicias en los momentos clave como la brotación y la floración. Tras un verano muy cálido con temperaturas medias superiores a 30 ºC, llegaron las lluvias a comienzos de septiembre, cruciales para mitigar la sequía en el viñedo. La vendimia transcurrió sin mayores contratiempos y terminó a mediados de septiembre.

Tim Atkin:

El Carretil is a 3.64-hectare, south-facing vineyard planted in 1930, 1975 and 1988 that’s located in the lower part of Laguardia. Counterintuitively perhaps, this is the most graceful and ethereal of Carlos López de Lacalle’s wines, with evident limestone freshness, Pinot Noirlike flavours of raspberry and pomegranate, fine-boned tannins and scented 20% new oak. Rioja at its most enchanting. 2027-38

The bottled 2023 El Carretil is beautiful. It has a peachy side that is even more accentuated in the stunning 2024 that I tasted unbottled next to this. It's fragrant and perfumed, showy and very impressive, open and expressive, combining power with elegance. This is truly harmonious, with very fine, abundant and chalky tannins. The ripeness is contained and unnoticed and comes through as balanced and fine-boned. 4,738 bottles produced. It was bottled in March 2025.

James Suckling:

This has excellent depth, showing lots of ripe but bright berries with plums, cherries, spices and graphite. Tannins are structured yet very fine-grained, almost chalky, with fruit and density. Persistent finish. Drink upon release, but better from 2027. About 4,000 bottles produced.
