The 2021 Sant Antoni de Scala Dei is pure Garnacha from high-altitude vines on limestone and clay soils planted in 1945 at 580 to 610 meters in elevation. It was produced like in the 1970s and before: harvesting the grapes in early October and fermenting the full clusters in concrete with indigenous yeasts and maturing the wine after 60 days of maceration in a used oak foudre and three more months in concrete before bottling. It has a bright and clean ruby color, with a deep nose of berry fruit, aromatic herbs and decayed flowers, quite attractive and showy but with elegance. There's a balsamic and spicy side to it too. It comes in at 14.5% alcohol and has a pH of 3.6. It's medium to full-bodied, with fine, abundant tannins. 2,074 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2023.
This wine has a lovely nose of red berries, strawberry liqueur and hints of dried Mediterranean herbs and underbrush. On the palate it’s vibrant and medium- to full-bodied with fine-grained tannins and bright, refreshing acidity that brings balance and completeness. It shows attractive tension, making it both lively and harmonious. Crafted from vines planted in 1973 in clay soils at around 600 meters of altitude in Sant Antoni de Montalt, it undergoes fermentation with whole clusters and long maceration, and is aged in large foudres. Drink or hold.
