The most elegant and floral of the reds is the 2024 Nace La Sierra, which also has even lower alcohol than its siblings, only 12%. This is an ethereal wine with light and inner strength, full of energy but weightless. It's 70% Garnacha, 20% Tinta Velasco and 10% Pasera from a vineyard of 0.56 hectares that was planted between 1950 and 1954 (and another half hectare of Garnacha that was planted later but already makes it to the wine). He remembers harvesting this vineyard as a kid with another 15 people, sharing lunch and everything, which mentally transported me to an old lagar where the grapes were foot trodden, all together. The wine matured in a 1,000-liter oak barrel for eight months. It finishes with pungent flavors from the past. 1,200 bottles produced. It was bottled in September 2025. (Luis Gutiérrez)
Not quite as exciting as the break-out 2023 vintage, but this superb blend of Garnacha, 20% Graciano de Alfaro (Tinto Velasco) and 5% Pasera is still one of the best Rioja Oriental reds. Floral, herbal and engaging, it’s simultaneously dense yet refreshing with vivid plum and redcurrant fruit, filigree tannins and a taut, limestone-etched finish. 2027-33.
