Fondillón Luis XIV Edad Superior a 25 Años

I tasted the mahogany-colored L-O4 (printed in small letters on the back of the bottle) of the NV Fondillón Luis XIV, Edad Superior a 25 años, which means it was their fourth bottling, in this case from May 2023. It's a blend of three "toneles" (casks) and has the warmth and sweetness of the region, with notes of dry figs, dates and carob beans and a spicy twist. It's over 25 years of average age, dense, pungent and concentrated, with a hint of volatility (normal for its age), bittersweet flavors and 43 grams of sugar. This was, apparently, never fortified but has 16.81% alcohol, in theory through concentration from evaporation, and it also has notable acidity (6.1 grams). 1,300 half-liter bottles.
An excellent example of Fondillón from Alicante, this is the result of two barrels of Monastrell called Cupido and La Cova de Pena with a minimum ageing of 25 years. The extended time in barrel has produced a wine rich in hazelnuts and almonds as well as cinnamon, dried figs and creamy caramel. Only 800 bottles are made 2024 - 2034
