The new kid on the block is the 2021 Tesín de la Capana, produced with the grapes from an old plot that is 70% north-facing on clay-rich soils and the rest south-facing on sandier soils. This is a notable addition to their portfolio of crus, a fresher wine with a contained 12.6% alcohol, a pH of 3.59 and 5.4 grams of acidity. Like the rest of the wines, it fermented with full clusters, 100% in this case, in open-top used 500-liter oak barrels, where the wine later matured for one year. It has a perfumed nose combining notes of flowers, wild berries, herbs and a spicy twist. The palate is medium-bodied, with very fine tannins and very good freshness, coming through as vibrant and clean. I think it has the potential to be the finest wine here. A great debut! As with the others, there are only 876 bottles. It was bottled in December 2022.
Only 600 bottles were made of Peique’s first release of this paraje, 100% old vine Mencía of approximately 90 years of age, grown on clay soils with a high sand content. The wine is fermented in 500L barrels – a third being whole bunch – and aged for 12 months. It is rich and powerful but with a very fresh core and a wonderful touch of salinity which lifts the wine. The tannins are already softening and a spicy red pepper finish brings real vibrancy to the wine. 2025-29
