A fresh and minerally sparkling wine with with sliced apple, brioche and lemon character. Medium-bodied, creamy and intense. Bread dough at the end. Tight and bright. 60% chardonnay and 40% pinot noir. Three years on the lees. Disgorged in October 2023. 5 g/L residual sugar. Drink now. - James Suckling, Senior Editor.
The NV Kumeu Cremant was bottled in August 2020 and disgorged in October 2023 with five grams of residual per liter. The nose leads with toasty brioche and warm baking spices, with layers of yuzus and lemon. In the mouth, the wine is supple and full-flavored, with richness and density for days. There's a lot to like about this powerful, plush wine. It's seriously vinous in its style. 13% alcohol. - Erin Larkin.
Readers will likely be familiar with Kumeu River’s stable of exemplary Chardonnays but possibly less so the three smart Crémants: a NV, Rosé and Blanc de Blancs. The NV shows apple skin, light creamy notes and a faint hint of smokiness, the autolysis is fairly muted but there is plenty of weight and warmth to the wine, with a fuller body and quite pithy texture. A rich, vinous style that is well-suited to food. - Emma Jenkins MW.
