El esplendor de esta antigua bodega regresa con más fuerza que nunca en este Château Canon. El proyecto, liderado por Nicolas Audebert, ha conseguido extraer lo mejor de la añada en una referencia llena de complejidad y volumen, en el que todos los matices se encuentran en perfecta armonía. La categoría de Saint Emilion 1er Grand Cru Classé está más que justificada.

La entrega de este vino está prevista en el segundo trimestre de 2023.

El comienzo templado del año provocó que la brotación comenzará unas dos semanas antes de lo habitual. La floración se produjo a finales de mayo en condiciones cálidas y secas. A partir de mediados de junio hubo un periodo de sequía de casi dos meses en toda la región de Burdeos. La primera quincena de septiembre fue seca y soleada, lo que aceleró la maduración antes de la vendimia.
Rendimiento
40 hectolitros por hectárea.
Cosecha
La vendimia manual tuvo lugar del 4 al 21 de septiembre para la Merlot, y del 18 al 23 de septiembre para la Cabernet franc.
Vinificación
Encubado por gravedad. Fermentación maloláctica en barricas nuevas (1/3 del vino) y en depósitos de acero inoxidable.
Envejecimiento
Crianza de 18 meses en barrica nueva (50% del vino).

The Wine Advocate:

The brilliant 2020 Canon looks set to surpass both the 2019 and 2016 as this estate's finest wine since the post-war period, though like many of the best 2020s, it will require more patience than its 2019 counterpart. Unwinding in the glass with aromas of cherries and raspberries mingled with notions of exotic spices and iris, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with vibrant acids and beautifully polished, chalky tannins. Pure and precise, it concludes with a long, mouthwatering finish. This beautifully constructed wine communicates the essence of this superb limestone terroir, and it will be worth a special effort to track down and cellar.

Decanter:

This is intense, structured and concentrated yet with an abundance of violet and peony notes that curl up through the tannins, combining halfway through the palate with blueberry, raspberry, tobacco, gunsmoke and sculpted, precise pulses of chalk minerality. There is just so much to talk about with this wine, but the overall impression is of dozens of carefully crafted elements that steal up on you. It's hard not to be convinced by its success - and as ever with Canon you are in no doubt as to how well it will age. Gorgeous. 50% new barrels. 3.53pH. Harvest 4 September to 23 September. 50% new oak. A yield of 40hl/ha. Could go up after tasting in bottle, a potential 100 points. 98-100.

James Suckling:

Black cherries, fresh herbs, lemon rind, and violets on the nose. Crushed stone, too. Medium to full body with super fine tannins that run the length of the wine. It goes on for minutes. A great wine. Try after 2027, but already thoroughly gorgeous. A classical Canon.

Jeb Dunnuck:

The 2020 Château Canon is another brilliant wine in a long line of brilliant wines from this incredible team and consistent estate. Coming from the upper plateau (unquestionably one of the finest terroirs on the upper plateau) and 68% Merlot and 32% Cabernet Franc, it offers a perfumed, ethereal nose of red and blue fruits, violets, white flowers, and unsmoked tobacco. With riveting purity, full-bodied richness, flawless balance, and a great, great finish, it’s going to push the upper limits of my scale. The tannins here are incredible as well, and this beauty should drink well for 20-30 years. Hats off to technical director Nicolas Audebert and his team for another insanely good wine.
