Manoella Tinto 2017

The 2017 Tinto Quinta da Manoella is mostly a 60/25 blend of Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca, with Tinta Roriz and Tinta Francisca filling out the blend. It was aged for 16 months in used French oak and comes in at 14% alcohol. This was a tank sample when seen in Portugal last June. It is now in the USA. This seems a bit richer in fruit intensity than the 2016 also reviewed this issue, but mostly it is younger and a little less developed. Once past that burst of concentrated fruit, this maintains the style of the brand—elegant, with fairly ripe tannins. It is not quite as ready to drink as the 2016, though. It really needs a year in the cellar. For the moment, this seems to be just a little better. I would expect that conclusion to be even clearer around 2022 as both wines develop. This is a nice value.
