Descripción

La pequeña parcela origen de este monovarietal de Tempranillo fue una de las primeras de Rioja Alavesa en contar con la calificación de Viñedo Singular, la máxima en calidad en la D.O.Ca. Todo un regalo que se materializa en un tinto moderno, exuberante, maduro y potente y, al mismo tiempo, serio, complejo y preciso.

Gran complejidad de aromas con notas de fruta negra madura, ahumados y torrefactos.

Elegante, con un tanino aterciopelado que da lugar a un paso por boca agradable. Final persistente, con recuerdos a fruta madura, torrefacto y hierbas aromáticas.

Viñedo y elaboración

Descripción
Una única parcela calificada como Viñedo Singular plantada en Villabuena de Álava en una ladera a una altitud de 520 metros sobre el nivel del mar y orientación noreste-suroeste. Viticultura integrada con técnicas tradicionales.

3,85 hectáreas.
Edad
Viña plantada en 1936 y registrada en 1940.
Suelo
Arcilloso-calcáreo, alto porcentaje de caliza.
Clima
Atlántico con influencia mediterránea. En 2021, la temperatura media fue de 12,30 °C, la pluviosidad, 459 milímetros y la exposición solar de 2.250 horas al año.
Rendimiento
4.850 kilogramos por hectárea.
Cosecha
Vendimia manual en cajas de 15 kilogramos.
Vinificación
Tras el despalillado de las uvas, éstas pasaron a tinas de madera para realizar la fermentación alcohólica. La fermentación maloláctica aconteció el 50% en barrica nueva y el otro 50% restante en la misma tina de madera.
Envejecimiento
Crianza de 14 meses en barricas 100% de roble francés (procedentes de Darnajou y Taransaud).

Opinión de los críticos

Decanter:

El Regalo is the name of a 3.85ha organic parcel of bush-vine Tempranillo planted in 1936, although it wasn't registered until 1940 because of the Spanish Civil War. From vines planted on poor loamy and alkaline soils with a lot of limestone, it is a very pure representation of the Alavesa region. Beth Willard: Great purity of fruit with dark forest berries and red fruit, ripe tannins and balanced oak. Very elegant yet intense, with black pepper notes. There are some lovely savoury elements to this wine and it is already drinking very well even though it will develop further. Matthew Forster MW: Traditional, compact black cherry fruit, with black pepper and heavy oak tannin. Plenty of depth and concentration. Pierre Mansour: Peppery, cedary nose, with a real sense of place. Intense and concentrated palate, with blackberry notes and well structured, velvety tannins. Compact and satisfying.

James Suckling:

A serious Rioja showing formidable depth, complexity, precision and length. Chocolate, blackberries, minerals and iodine on the nose. Quite polished on the palate, with a full body and polished but broad-shouldered tannins. Long, naturally concentrated and caressing. Clearly shows potential for aging. Better in two more years. The Wine Advocate:

The exuberant 2021 El Regalo is ripe, showy and generously oaked, but somehow it feels in better balance than the Reserva from 2020 I tasted next to it. It's modern, ripe and powerful, quite aromatic and showy. It's mostly Tempranillo with some white grapes and has 14.85% alcohol. It had an élevage of 16 months in barriques and 5,000-liter oak vats. 14,272 bottles and some larger formats produced. It was bottled in July 2023. (Luis Guitérrez)
