Specimen Nº1

There is an unusual blend of 2013, 2014 and 2015 they call NV Specimen Nº1, which I guess is inspired by the Reserva Especial from Vega Sicilia, where they select wine that shows aging potential from lots that were aged in 500-liter barrels and 1,200-liter foudres. The varietal breakdown is 86% Tempranillo (Tinto Fino) and 14% Cabernet Sauvignon that, on average, matured in oak for 36 months. This wine felt like it was from a different winemaking era, as I sensed a change toward more freshness and less oak, but this is obviously older and perhaps produced with other ideas in mind. It's a classical ripe and generously oaked Ribera del Duero for fans of that style, with plenty of tannins, smoky and spicy flavors and a dry, somewhat astringent finish. 3,666 bottles and 100 magnums were filled in September 2017.
The intense note of elderberries and blackberries here is certainly impressive, as are the tarry and ashy accents. Then comes a surprisingly finely knit palate, considering the intensity of the fruit and depth of flavor. Chewy and quite long on the finish. Drink in 2021.
