Sierra Cantabria Reserva 2013

2013 was not an easy vintage, but the 2013 Reserva shows poise and balance. It might be less concentrated than usual, and it was bottled at 13.6% alcohol. It matured in 225-liter barrels—70% French and the rest American—for some 17months, during which time it was racked every four months. This is a weaker wine, and the oak made a big imprint on the nose and the palate. It was a cold and rainy year, and the wines perhaps were not strong enough to take 18 months in oak. This is a traditional, filtered reserva, quite polished and soft. It's light to medium-bodied with spicy, smoky and creamy flavors and good acidity. 20,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in February 2017.
A firm and silky red with pretty brightness and clarity. Dark berries, hints of cedar and tobacco. Medium body. Well done for a difficult vintage. Drink now.
