Fattoria Le Pupille Syrah 2016

Fabulous complexity on the nose with crushed blackberries, chocolate, walnuts and tar. Lots of dried flowers. Full body. Layered and creamy with superb tannin texture and length. Hints of stone. Half made in amphora and half in casks. Aged one year in old casks. Drink or hold. 3,500 bottles made.
Le Pupille Syrah is imbued with the freshness of Tuscany's coastal Maremma. A blend of two sites which both benefit from cool micro-climates - one facing the morning sun, the other tempered by the cool air from the valley floor and nearby river - Le Pupille is elegant, finely textured and smooth. It's also complex: red and black berry aromas are elevated by cool blue fruits and a violet overtone accompanied by speckles of wood, chocolate and balsam. The tingle of acidity on the attack gives way to spicy red and black fruits carefully framed by wood, then chocolate and juicy blue fruits emerge on the mid-palate. The tannins are super-fine and grippy, with a clayey texture emphasised by the dry, bricky terracotta character on the spicy, balsamic finish. There's clear underlying heft here, but it displays impeccable manners. This can be enjoyed over the next 10-15 years. Drinking Window 2021 - 2036
I reviewed this wine last year but welcomed the opportunity to taste it again one year later. My score has not changed, but I have extended the drinking window by a few years. The Fattoria le Pupille 2016 Le Pupille is an ambitious expression of amphorae-fermented Syrah. It presents cherry and dark plum, with earthy tones followed by tarry spice and campfire smoke. The meaty intensity normally associated with the Syrah grape is replaced here by plump and rich dark fruit. Give the wine a little extra time in your cellar to evolve and unwind.
