This is very seamless with beautiful dark fruit, light chocolate, cedar and dried flowers. Medium-to full-body with gorgeous fruit and a long and persistent finish. Shows balance and focus. Drink now.
The 2015 El Puntido was produced with Tempranillo grapes from their highest-altitude vineyard in the village of Páganos in Rioja Alavesa. Fermentation was traditional, destemmed and in stainless steel with yeasts selected from the vineyard. This tends to be quite ripe, and the élevage in new barrique for 18 months makes it smoky, spicy and toasty, with a creamy/luxurious twist. But it's also floral and expressive, following the general trend I saw of wines with better integrated oak. It also shows the profile of the 2015s, with good ripeness but keeping very good freshness, and the quality of the tannins is very good and provide a bit of a chalky texture and a dry, serious finish. It has weight and freshness. 40,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2017.
The flagship, single vineyard is the 2015 El Puntido , which is all Tempranillo that spent 16 months in new French oak. Blackcurrants, smoked plums, lead pencil, crushed violets, and Asian spice notes all emerge from this medium to full-bodied, incredibly elegant, and seamless wine that builds nicely on the palate. With fine tannins, beautiful balance, and a great finish, drink it any time over the coming 10-15 years or so.
