Amancio 2015 Magnum

The 2015 Amancio is 100% Tempranillo, from vines planted in the 1970s, that spent 18 months in new French oak. It’s another incredible wine from this estate as well as the 2015 vintage. Awesome notes of blackcurrants, scorched earth, chocolate, lead pencil shavings, and white flowers all define the bouquet. Incredibly elegant, full-bodied, magically textured, and multi-dimensional on the palate, it builds beautifully with time in the glass, has ultra-fine tannins, and is an incredible wine any way you look at it. This thrilling Rioja will benefit from 2-4 years of bottle age and keep for two decades or more.
2015 was a warmer and riper year, so it was interesting to taste the single-vineyard 2015 Amancio next to other 2016s. It fermented in 1,000-liter oak vats and was foot trodden for the first six days. It then matured in brand new French oak barrels for 24 months. The character of the vintage is quite obvious in the wine, and the oak seems to have marked the wine more. It feels spicy and toasty, with balsamic and creamy notes and an unusual touch of marzipan, already developing tertiary notes of balsam and incense. This is a powerful wine, with plenty of tannins and a dry, astringent finish. This is more backward and less approachable than the 2016s; it needs some more time in bottle to polish those edges that currently give it a more rustic . character. Give it time. 4,000 bottles were filled in February 2018. - Luis Gutiérrez.
Lots of blackberry, blueberry and black-licorice character. Very woody and powerful. A big and rich wine with great depth and beauty. A little old-school, but you have to appreciate the reality and profound intensity. For big-wine lovers. Drink in 2022.
