Cotizadísimo y siempre entre los más grandes, este Premier Cru Classé destaca por ser uno de los vinos más potentes y exuberantes de Burdeos. Siguiendo la tónica de la región, 2024 fue el resultado de un año de tiempo complejo que remarcó el carácter atlántico de los terruños de origen de este icónico tinto. 

Como en cada añada, la parte superior de la etiqueta exhibirá una ilustración de un artista que no será revelada hasta el 1 de diciembre de 2026. Figuras como Miró, Chagall, Braque, Picasso, Tàpies, Francis Bacon, Dali, Balthus o Jeff Koons pudieron gozar de ese honor.

Nariz
Refinada y compleja que se abre poco a poco en aromas de arándanos silvestres y bayas rojas realzadas por notas de 'brioche' y un delicado toque floral. Toques de almendra tostada le aportan una sutil suculencia que redondea el conjunto.
Boca
De gran cuerpo y suavidad, su textura sedosa y armoniosa envuelve el paladar, introduciendo una impresión de opulencia que se mezcla con una atractiva mineralidad y algunas notas ahumadas. Los taninos, muy refinados, precisos y cincelados, aportan equilibrio y estructura, mientras que las luminosas notas de bayas rojas se extienden en un largo final, dejando una persistente impresión de frescura y elegancia.

Viñedo y elaboración

Descripción
Viñedos plantados en montículos (de ahí el nombre del 'château') en una estrecha franja de 80 kilómetros de largo y de 5 a 10 kilómetros de ancho cerca del río Gironda, que los dota de reservas hídricas en profundidad. La propiedad limita al norte con el bosque de Las Landas que actúa de barrera protectora suavizando las temperaturas, también más moderadas por la influencia del río. La finca disfruta de unas condiciones naturales excepcionales, desde la calidad de sus suelos hasta su ideal exposición y luz solar.

2024 fue una añada difícil al principio y al final del periodo vegetativo, aunque afortunadamente el tiempo mejoró en los momentos críticos permitiendo preservar la calidad. El verano caluroso, seco y soleado provocó una escasez de agua que favoreció los taninos maduros y fomentó la síntesis de antocianos. Desde el laboreo en primavera hasta la vendimia, el personal comprometido y unos medios técnicos muy eficaces mantuvo al 'château' en primera línea. Esa gestión afinada del viñedo les ayudó a elaborar vinos frescos, muy aromáticos, refinados y elegantes, que ilustran a la perfección la expresión atlántica de los terruños de los que proceden.

Envejecimiento
Se prevé una crianza de unos 18 meses en barricas nuevas de roble francés.

James Suckling:

This shows plenty of drive with dusty and creamy tannins that run the length of the wine and builds at the end. It’s medium-bodied showing a focus and energy. Dark currants and flowers flavor. This really has length and it has the depth to improve with age. 93% cabernet sauvignon and 7% merlot.

Tim Atkin:

The alluring exuberance of Mouton is already here. Saturated blue and black fruits. Spices and some clay earthiness with plenty of dried fruit already and fresh but not overpowering acidity, bright tannins already in harmony with the level of fruit. This is not a deep or richly profound Mouton, but an elegant and fresh example which captures the style of the vintage and belies its likely quality reputation. Very well done to Jean- Emmanual Danjoy and his team.

Decanter:

Sweet blackcurrants, orange rind, violets, plums, cherry cream and some liquorice. Round and filling, this is dense and intense with prominent tannins, a juicy core and lots of structure. It’s forward and really intense with fine, mineral-edged tannins. Sophisticated and really generous, ample and persistent with such a fleshy mouthfeel. Zero wood. This is just brilliant - fresh, lively, zingy and ample. Lovely finesse too. There’s acidity for sure, but there’s creaminess to counter it. A marvelous Mouton. Ageing 100% new barrels, 18 months. 3.71pH. (Georgina Hindle)

One of the wines of the vintage, if not the wine of the vintage, the 2024 Château Mouton Rothschild checks in as a blend of 93% Cabernet Sauvignon and 7% Merlot, hitting 12.9% alcohol and a pH of 3.71, that's resting in 100% new barrels. It sports a dense purple hue as well as absolutely rocking aromatics of blackcurrants, freshly sharpened pencils, graphite, and smoked tobacco. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, it has a layered, opulent mouthfeel, velvety tannins, ample mid-palate depth, and a great finish. It's an incredible achievement in the vintage that will need just 4-6 years of bottle age and have a broad, lengthy drinking window. Hats off to technical director Jean-Emmanuel Danjoy and the entire Mouton team.

Vinous:

The 2024 Mouton Rothschild, which has a little more Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend, was picked between September 23 and October 5 and aged for 18 months in 100% new oak. This has an understated bouquet with blackberry, cedar and graphite scents that take their time to unfold. The nose possesses very fine delineation though the oak is a little more prominent at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied and quite linear in style with fine tannins. A less flamboyant Mouton Rothschild in keeping with the style of the vintage, the 2024 discretely gains depth towards the finish and reveals a dash of white pepper on the aftertaste. Harvested between September 23 and October 5, the 2024 Mouton Rothschild is a blend of 93% Cabernet Sauvignon and 7% Merlot that attained 12.9% alcohol. Offering up aromas of crème de cassis, cigar wrapper and pencil shavings, it's medium to full-bodied, dense and layered, with a muscular, monolithic style built around austere, chalky tannins. Somewhat reminiscent of the estate's 2001 vintage (which is just coming around today at age 24), this structured, youthfully angular Mouton will require patience. (William Kelley)
