Siepi, la storica tenuta toscana della famiglia Mazzei, spicca per la sua posizione e orientamento unici e ha un microclima speciale che negli anni '80 ha permesso di puntare sulla coltivazione del Merlot come complemento ideale al Sangiovese locale. Entrambe le varietà danno vita all'omonimo vino rosso della tenuta, esempio di perfetto equilibrio tra eleganza, potenza e complessità. Come ha sottolineato la rivista specializzata Gambero Rosso, siamo di fronte a una delle 50 etichette più emblematiche che hanno cambiato lo stile del vino italiano

Dominato da aromi croccanti di sambuco, prugna e frutti di bosco, insieme a note profumate di sandalo e tabacco.
Bocca
Vino rosso complesso ed equilibrato con un finale molto lungo e brillante.

Si consiglia di servire a 16 °C.
Consumo
Fino al 2040 circa, se conservato in ottime condizioni.
Abbinamento
Perfetto con piatti saporiti e ricchi di consistenza, accompagnati da salse dense e selvaggina.

Tenuta storica che risale al 1435 e si trova a Castella in Chianti. Vigneti piantati a 260 metri sul livello del mare, con esposizione sud-sud-ovest.

Tra i 22 e i 35 anni.
Suolo
Alberese, questo è calcareo e in parte argilloso.
Clima
L'annata 2020 è stata caratterizzata da un inverno freddo e con abbondanti precipitazioni. Alla primavera fresca, con piogge sufficienti e ben distribuite, è seguita un'estate calda e lunga, ma con grandi escursioni termiche tra il giorno e la notte che hanno permesso di completare in modo ottimale il processo di maturazione dell'uva. Da notare anche l'assenza di stress idrico grazie alle piogge di giugno e settembre e l'assenza di problemi critici in materia di protezione fitosanitaria. Tutto questo ha permesso di ottenere un'annata di ottima qualità, con uve dalla buccia spessa e un'eccellente maturazione fenolica che, una volta vinificate, hanno dato vini ricchi e ben strutturati, ma allo stesso tempo equilibrati e freschi.
Raccolto
Vendemmia manuale dal 7 settembre (Merlot) al 21 dello stesso mese (Sangiovese).
Vinificazione
Fermentazione a 26-28 °C, in depositi di acciaio inox. Macerazione di 14 giorni (Merlot) e 18 per il Sangiovese.
Invecchiamento
Affinamento per 18 mesi in botti di rovere francese (70% nuove). Dopo questo periodo passa in vasche di cemento dove rimane per altri 3 mesi.
Imbottigliamento
Nel luglio 2022.

Graphite and lead pencil is coming through, together with violets and blackberries. Some tar and asphalt, too. Full-bodied, yet creamy and crunchy, with agile liveliness that goes on for minutes. Fabulous length. Drinkable already, but will age gracefully for decades.

Decanter:

Yields in 2020 were down due to cold spells in April which affected the vines that had already begun budburst, however the summer was pretty average in terms of temperature and rainfall, allowing for a successful growing season. Bottled this May/June and released on La Place on 14 September 2022, the youthful 2020 vintage of Siepi is bursting with black and blue fruits, floral and spice aromas. Intense, concentrated and silky in the mouth, it features balsamic blueberry alongside richer black cherry and a streak of pomegranate. Liquorice, coffee, spice and tar notes from oak ageing are still in the foreground but will settle down and eventually provide a complex backdrop for the fruit to shine. The palate is nicely freshened up by high acidity, which brings clarity and length. 29,000 bottles produced.

Wine Enthusiast:

The nose balances dense, fiery aromas of grilled meat, pepper and gunpowder with lighter, friendlier notes of cherries and wild berries. The berries take a leading role on the palate, but the spicy smokiness lingers as an assertive undertone, leading into a hot finish. Tannins have grit without being rustic, emphasizing a saliva-inducing savoriness throughout.

Equal parts Merlot and Sangiovese, the Mazzei 2020 Siepi is a terrific vintage in a long line of wines that I had the pleasure of tasting through last year in a complete retrospective. The first vintage produced was 1992. The soils in the Siepi vineyard are especially deep, and the site is surrounded by forests to keep it cool. These conditions give rise to abundant aromas of sweet black cherry, underbrush and blue wild flower. This is a medium to full-bodied Tuscan red that shows enormous elegance and depth.
