Descripción

Grand Cru Classé de Graves de la reputada denominación Pessac-Léognan. La bodega está dirigida desde hace más de cuarenta años por Olivier Bernard, quien perpetúa ese espíritu de equilibrio y el afán constante por la perfección que han sido el sello distintivo de este excelente vino. Domaine de Chevalier es una de las fincas emblemáticas de los grandes crus clasificados de Burdeos. En esta añada 2024 muestra un nivel nivel de azúcar, y por tanto de alcohol inferior respecto a las últimas cosechas, pero mantiene una fruta radiante y delicada, atractivos matices especiados y minerales y una estructura tánica refinada y elegante.

Nariz
Refinada e intensa con aromas a pequeñas bayas rojas y negras, junto con humus fresco sobre notas de especias finas, pimienta y roble de la Cabernet sauvignon, fresa silvestre, mora y grosella negra que expresan frescura. La Merlot aporta un toque suave, profundo y tentador de cereza negra.
Boca
Tinto sabroso, preciso y armonioso que destaca por su densidad de taninos finos y afrutados. Se despliega sin la menor debilidad, dando lugar a un final largo, elegante y luminoso. Un vino de gran clase y distinción, exquisitamente elaborado en un estilo clásico. Muy equilibrado, con un excelente potencial de envejecimiento.

Descripción
Viñedo situado en Léognan, capital de la región de Graves, en proceso de conversión a agricultura orgánica.

Grava sobre subsuelo de arcilla y grava.
Clima
El invierno húmedo y suave dio paso a una primavera temprana, aún lluviosa pero afortunadamente libre de heladas tardías. Estas condiciones húmedas propiciaron un crecimiento rápido y generoso de todas las variedades de uva. "Naturalmente, el mildiu intentó aguar la fiesta, pero nuestros viticultores, siempre atentos, lo atajaron rápidamente y se mantuvieron en estado de alerta tras los desafíos de la añada 2023", indican desde el propio domaine. La floración tuvo lugar en el momento justo, y el verano (julio-agosto) fue lo suficientemente seco y cálido como para garantizar una excelente maduración en muy buenas condiciones. Las lluvias volvieron en los diez primeros días de septiembre, pero los hollejos de las uvas tintas más resistentes y los suelos bien drenados permitieron esperar una madurez fenólica óptima.

48 hectolitros por hectárea.
Cosecha
Vendimia manual en pequeñas cajas se llevó a cabo del 20 de septiembre al 8 de octubre de 2024.
Vinificación
Selección manual de los racimos en la bodega y selección óptica tras el despalillado. Elaboración en cuatro cubas (de acero, de acero inoxidable, de hormigón tulipán y de madera) para optimizar la selección de las parcelas, perfeccionar la extracción y afinar el «assemblage».
Envejecimiento
Crianza prevista de 18 meses en barricas de roble, el 35% nuevas.

Opinión de los críticos

James Suckling:

Fine cocoa powder, cedar, minerals, currants and blue fruit. Juicy and medium- to full-bodied with fresh, firm tannins and a long, crunchy finish. It lingers well. 65% cabernet sauvignon, 30% merlot and 5% petit verdot.

Tim Atkin:

Black fruit and earthy mineral aromas with cassis and sloe. Juicy acidity and fresh fruit extract with well-judged tannins  and bright acidity. Long and quite dry, fresh finish. Will need a few years to come out of its shell, but all the elements are there and this has delicious fruit weight for the vintage.

Falstaff:

Dark ruby, purple reflections, subtle brightening on the rim. On the nose, fresh red fruits of the forest confit, hints of sweet cherries, currants and spices, subtle tobacco nuances. Medium-bodied, notes of red cherries, freshly structured and balanced, with a hint of nougat on the mineral finish. Will benefit from bottle ageing. (Peter Moser)

Jeb Dunnuck:

Based on 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, and 5% Petit Verdot, the 2024 Domaine de Chevalier was brought up in 30% new oak and reveals ripe red and black fruits, loamy earth, tobacco, and graphite. Medium-bodied and nicely balanced on the palate, it has juicy acidity, a pure, classic character, and outstanding length. It's a beautiful wine that brings to mind the best vintages from the 1980s and 1990s.

Vinous:

The 2024 Domaine de Chevalier is soft, fruity and relatively simple, given its typical personality. Plum, black cherry, licorice, chocolate and sweet oak are pushed forward in this open-knit, easygoing Pessac-Léognan. There may be more here than meets the eye. We will see. Today, the 2024 is on the light side. Tasted two times. (Antonio Galloni)

Decanter:

Floral scents of rose and red berry fruit, dried herbs, savoury earth and touches of cinnamon. Juicy and soft, this is gentle with lovely calm, chalky tannins. It’s not a big wine in terms of fruit density but there is a gentle chew to the ripe fruit and it’s well framed. This isn't your usual fleshy Chevalier but it’s elegant and detailed, leaning into the vintage and still delivering plenty of easy enjoyment. (Georgina Hindle)

The Wine Advocate:

A blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot and 5% Cabernet Franc, the 2024 Domaine de Chevalier reveals a spicy, brooding bouquet of oak, dark berries and gentian. Medium to full-bodied, juicy and round, it's firm and has an assertive tannic frame, concluding with a somewhat chewy finish. Despite a respectable yield and a clear stylistic shift toward less oak influence, the estate’s sandy terroirs struggled to achieve full ripeness in this delicate vintage. (Yohan Castaing)
