Descripción

M. Chapoutier Les Varonniers se elabora con las viñas más antiguas de la denominación Crozes-Hermitage, al norte del Ródano. Las viñas se ubican en laderas graníticas con orientación sureste al final de la colina de Hermitage. En esta añada 2022 la Syrah está bien estructurada y cuenta con un equilibrio bastante fresco.

Nariz
Intensa y profunda con aromas de fruta negra, grafito y tapenade.
Boca
Carnosa, envolvente, con taninos finos y sedosos. El final es fresco y complejo.

Una añada 2022 marcada en líneas generales por la sequía y las altas temperaturas, a pesar de un enero con temperaturas bajo cero. La primavera llegó poco a poco, teniendo la pluviometría más baja desde 1959. En junio se produjo la primera ola de calor, por lo que la poda se redujo al máximo para que la sombra del follaje asegure la acidez natural de las uvas. Gracias a la viticultura biodinámica, las viñas se han ido adaptando a este calentamiento global.
Cosecha
Vendimia manual.
Vinificación
La fermentación se realiza en pequeños tanques de hormigón. La fermentación es larga (casi un mes) y solo se utiliza el mosto yema.
Envejecimiento
Crianza durante 14-18 meses en barricas de roble (con un porcentaje de roble nuevo).

Cassis, fresh fig, violets, and ground pepper, as well as beautiful violet notes, all emerge from the 2022 Crozes-Ermitage Les Varonniers, a Hermitage look-alike that has medium to full-bodied richness, remarkable purity, and fine-grained, polished tannins that build on the palate. Coming from a west facing, granitic hillside just beside Hermitage Hill, this beauty will warrant 4-6 years of bottle age and my money is on it being one of the top – and longest lived – Crozes in the vintage.

Sourced from grapes planted on granite in the western part of the appellation near the Hermitage's hill, the 2022 Crozes-Ermitage Les Varonniers is elegantly reduced with notes of flowers, iris, lilac and violet intertwined with lovely notes of dark cherries. Medium to full-bodied, dense and concentrated, it's firm and austere with structured tannins and a somewhat oaky finish. It will benefit from one to two years in the cellar to harmonize the mismatch between the fresh, floral nose and the more austere, bitter palate.
