Descripción

Nos encontramos ante uno de los grandes vinos clásicos de la historia. Château Latour está situado en el corazón de Médoc, a unos 50 kilómetros al noroeste de Burdeos, en un terroir privilegiado y a escasos metros del estuario del río Gironda. Este enclave ha dotado al viñedo de su conocida riqueza geológica y climática. En su coupage dominado por la Cabernet sauvignon se perciben la profundidad, la elegancia y la sedosidad elevadas a su máxima expresión. Sin duda, una referencia que trasciende hasta convertirse en una experiencia única. Esta maravillosa añada 2016 ha conseguido la puntuación perfecta de 100 puntos Suckling, 100 Tim Atkin y 100 Falstaff.

Nariz
Muy elegante y de gran pureza aromática con notas de violetas, frutillos rojos y negros como frambuesa, arándano y grosella negra y matices perfumados de tabaco, cacao, ceniza y regaliz.
Boca
Generosa y potente con una sensación aterciopelada y taninos sedosos. Rebosante de energía en el paso, culmina en un final magníficamente preciso y largo.
Temperatura de servicio
Se recomienda servir a 16 °C.
Consumo
Hasta 2055, aproximadamente, si se conserva en óptimas condiciones.

Viñedo y elaboración

Descripción
Este 'gran vin' se elabora exclusivamente con el fruto de los viñedos clasificados como Premier Grand Cru en 1855 de l’Enclos, mítica parcela amurallada ubicada sobre una loma y que rodea al propio 'château'.
Superficie
La propiedad cuenta con 92 hectáreas de viñedos, de los cuales 47 corresponden a l’Enclos.
Edad
Más de 60 años, si bien algunas cepas alcanzan los cien.

Gravas y arcilla.
Clima
Marítimo. Un invierno suave y húmedo y un mes de marzo fresco hicieron que la brotación del Merlot se produjera el 24 de marzo y la del Cabernet-Sauvignon el 30 de marzo. El buen tiempo y el calor de principios de mayo aceleraron el crecimiento vegetativo. La primera semana de junio fue seca, con temperaturas entre 20-25°C lo que propició la floración. Julio fue excepcionalmente caluroso y seco aunque las buenas reservas de agua del suelo permitieron a las vides resistir estas condiciones climáticas extremas. A principios de agosto, 8 mm de lluvia beneficiosa aceleraron el proceso de maduración. Septiembre fue soleado y cálido, pero justo cuando los signos de estrés hídrico y térmico empezaban a ser perceptibles, 35 mm de lluvia proporcionaron cierto alivio a las vides, de modo que las uvas continuaron madurando en condiciones óptimas.
Cosecha
La vendimia manual se realizó con un tiempo ideal del 22 al 30 de septiembre para el Merlot y del 7 al 19 de octubre para el Cabernet- Sauvignon.
Envejecimiento
Crianza en barricas de roble francés.

James Suckling:

I am dreaming as I smell this wine, perfectly ripe cabernet sauvignon with currants, tobacco and fresh mint. Orange blossoms too. This amazing nose is so complex. Medium- to full-bodied, this has has perfectly integrated tannins that you don't feel but know are there, elevating the wine to another level. It's very drinkable because of its stellar balance, yet the tannic tension gives it energy and seamless texture. A benchmark Latour that reminds me of the 1982 in many ways. Drink or hold.

Wine Enthusiast:

98–100. Barrel Sample. Reaching for 100 points, this Latour has great structure and power. Almost pure Cabernet Sauvignon this year, it is a grandiose wine, packed with tannins, rich black fruits and a solid core that will allow it to age over so many years. The acidity and crisp black-currant flavor at the end means the fruit can only shine even more as it develops. Superb.

The Wine Advocate:

On paper, the combination of this estate and this vintage should be a match made in heaven, and the 2016 Latour has already received resounding acclaim among the wine trade and commentariat. The result in the glass, however, didn't quite meet my lofty expectations, offering up aromas of cassis and blackberries mingled with cigar ash, pencil shavings and saddle leather, followed by a medium to full-bodied, rich and layered palate that's undeniably concentrated and muscular but also somewhat austerely structured, with firm tannins that assert themselves on the somewhat carnal finish. For sheer intensity of flavor, the 2016 is certainly impressive, but it appears to be missing the purity and precision that one might expect for a first growth in a great 21st-century vintage. Perhaps the wine's somewhat wild, rustic characteristics will integrate more seamlessly as more bottle bouquet develops, but my immediate reaction to tasting it was to purchase two more cases of the superb 2016 Forts de Latour.

Falstaff:

Deep dark ruby colour, opaque core with subtle rim. On the nose you detect blackberry, liquorice, black cherry, a touch of ripe plum, savoury oak and a hint of violet. Intense blackberry fruit on the palate, full of energy, taut and with perfect tannins. It seems monolithic and cool at first, but has balanced sweetness, great charm and very long on the palate. A perfect Cabernet wine that seems built for eternity.
