The 2021 Valtuille Mata Los Pardos is another paraje red from two plots of old vines planted with the classical Valtuille field blend of Mencía and other red and white varieties, including some Bastardo, Sousón and Estaladiña, on sand and clay soils. It all fermented together with 15% full clusters and indigenous yeasts in 7,500-liter oak vats without the addition of any oenological products. This is a place close to Villegas but with more weight and darker fruit. It's serious and elegant, with concentration and balance. A serious Valtuille. It matured in used 500-liter French oak barrels. 1,700 bottles were filled in February 2023. - Luis Gutiérrez.
90-year-old Mencía vines grown on clay and sandy soils in the Mata Los Pardos paraje provide both an intensely fruity and ripe red, thanks to the east facing slope, and elegant and fresh due to the north facing vines which mature more slowly. There are beautiful violet notes on the nose and plush purple fruit on the palate with ripe tannins. A powerful but well managed wine with serious old vine concentration. 2025-29
