El grand vin del château propiedad de François-Xavier Borie muestra en esta añada una excelente calidad apuntalada en uno de los porcentajes más altos de Cabernet en el coupage de los últimos tiempos. Elegancia, fruta madura, chocolate negro, regaliz, mineralidad y unos taninos finos pero persistentes con una excepcional capacidad de guarda.

Pese a que 2021 se recordará por las heladas acontecidas en el mes de abril, la ubicación de Grand-Puy-Lacoste entre la ría y el mar permitió que su viñedo saliera indemne de los daños ocasionados. La brotación fue bastante temprana y las lluvias, sobre todo en junio, requirieron una especial vigilancia para evitar el mildiu. Julio resultó también muy fresco y húmedo. Agosto siguió esa tónica más fresca de lo habitual pero ya sin lluvias lo que permitió que las vides maduraran en buenas condiciones y se compensara el frío de julio. La llegada del buen tiempo definitivo tuvo lugar en septiembre favoreciendo una cosecha madura y sana. En general, el ciclo fue uniforme, sin extremos de calor ni de lluvia.

40 hectolitros por hectárea.
Cosecha
Vendimia exclusivamente manual desde el 24 de septiembre a 8 de octubre de 2021.
Vinificación
Doble selección de las uvas, una antes del despalillado, la segunda tras este procedimiento. Larga maceración de unas 3 semanas. La mezcla tuvo lugar en diciembre de 2021.
Envejecimiento
Crianza en barricas de roble francés (el 75% nuevas).

James Suckling:

A refined, classic Pauillac with cassis, pencil shavings, ash and cherries. Juicy and really fine on the palate with silky tannins unwound into a layered, long finish. A refined, elegant interpretation that does not fall short on intensity. Real finesse here. Already delicious, but can hold, too.

The Wine Advocate:

The 2021 Grand-Puy-Lacoste is one of the vintage's successes, wafting from the glass with aromas of cassis and raspberries mingled with notions of violets, rose petals, pencil shavings and cigar wrapper. Medium to full-bodied, with a deep, layered core of pure fruit framed by ripe acids and sweet tannins, its suave, charming profile means that it will offer a broad drinking window. A slightly lower percentage of new oak, with lighter toasts, is reflected in better barrel integration out of the gates.

Decanter:

Lovely strong concentrated nose, full of Cabernet menthol and blackcurrant markers. Concentrated and so lively and juicy, really lifted with bright acidity, almost tart, but then pulled back by the salty, gravel minerality. Long with bite and a sense of power. A really nice, shining, tangy example. Not so tannic, they're super fine, but this has plenty of flavour and sense of excitement. I like it with its strong mentholated finish alongside clove, liquorice and tobacco.
