Een van de best gewaardeerde Spaanse wijnen ter wereld. L'Ermita is een van de grote wijnpareltjes van Spanje, waarmee Álvaro Palacios de top heeft bereikt wat betreft erkenning. Een Gran Viña Seleccionada die natuurlijk maar in heel kleine hoeveelheden wordt gemaakt. Exclusief, intiem en harmonieus.

De maker omschrijft hem als "de emotie van het classicisme". Leuk om te weten: de blend bestaat vooral uit de druivenrassen Garnacha en Samsó (Cariñena), maar er zit ook een klein beetje witte druiven in die in dezelfde wijngaard groeien

Descripción
Wijngaard in Gratallops met steile hellingen en een noordelijke en oostelijke ligging. Gelegen tussen 400 en 500 meter hoogte. Ontluiking vanaf 18 maart, bloei vanaf 19 mei en rijping vanaf 20 juli.

Bodem
Van leisteen (llicorella) met een laminaire structuur, verticaal en schuin geplaatst. Het perceel heeft een diagonale zandsteenader.
Klimaat
Continentaal met mediterrane invloeden. De regen in november, meer dan 80 liter, zorgde voor goede reserves en later bracht het begin van de winter een gezonde kou en de temperatuurschommelingen die horen bij een gebied op de grens tussen mediterrane en continentale invloeden. De winters in de Priorat zijn meestal droog, maar deze winter was extreem droog, met slechts 16 liter regen in de drie lange maanden van december tot februari, volgens de gegevens van L'Ermita. In het iets zuidelijker gelegen gebied van Finca Dofí en La Baixada kwam de neerslag nauwelijks boven de 10 liter. In maart en april werd de situatie weer wat normaler. Half mei, het hoogtepunt van de lente, ging deze oogst over in een vroege zomer. De stralende zon versnelde de bloei, waardoor alle druiven goed konden rijpen. De scheuten waren heel matig en de bladeren kort. Net aan het begin van de zomer was er een korte verkoelende pauze, maar dat was niet meer dan een luchtspiegeling. Al snel kwam er een aanhoudende hitte, met nachten die lekker warm waren, net als in de subtropen. Het jaar werd gered doordat er midden juli 42 liter regen viel. Echte meeldauw en valse meeldauw bleven beperkt door de zon, waardoor we maar weinig hoefden te sproeien. Het verrassende was dat de oogst toch groter was.
Oogst
Oogst op 13 oktober 2022.
Wijnmaken
100% ontsteeld en zacht geperst. Alcoholische gisting in kleine houten vaten met malceratie. Maceratie gedurende ongeveer 45 dagen. Spontane malolactische gisting in vaten.
Veroudering
Rijping van ongeveer 14 maanden in ovale vaten van Frans eikenhout.

Meningen van critici

Decanter:

L’Ermita is the second of Alvaro Palacios’ top wines to gain the Gran Vinya Classificada category. The vineyard now measures 4.7ha; it increased when Palacios and René Barbier swapped land. Work has been done to graft red varieties onto white vines. The result of the labours – including the permissions required from the Archbishop of Zaragoza for this holy hermitage – is a delight. Gloriously aromatic nose, introducing a wonderfully complex palate of cherries integrated with savoury notes, a shaft of minerality, wild herbs, and dark fruit conserve. Well-deserving of its reputation as one of Spain's great wines. Gran Vinya Classificada. 4,930 bottles produced. (Sarah Jane Evans MW)

James Suckling:

This wine comes from a warm, dry vintage, but it doesn’t retain the heat. On the contrary, it is delicate, agile and elegant, as are the rest of Palacios’ wines this year from Priorat. Only the tannin texture, which is slightly firmer and more present this year, shows the vintage character. Immense purity from its raspberry, pomegranate, mineral and white pepper notes, with touches of grilled herbs and lard. Not quite full-bodied, but the mineral tension gives it elasticity and weight. This is still closer to the more delicate and refined 2021 than to the richer and more concentrated 2020 in style, despite its vintage warmth. Stony in the finish. Drink or hold. (Zekun Shuai)

The Wine Advocate:

The 2022 L'Ermita wasn't bottled when I tasted it in January 2024. They selected the grapes from 2.28 hectares out of the total 4.7 hectares planted in 1909, 1939 and 1996 to produce this red classified as Gran Vinya Classificada, the top of the quality hierarchy in the Priorat appellation. It was produced with a blend of 92% Garnacha, 7% Cariñena and 1% of the local whites, Garnacha Blanca, Macabeo and Pedro Ximénez fermented with part of full clusters and indigenous yeasts in oak vats with a maceration of 23 days followed by an élevage in French oak oval foudres that is expected to last 14 months. The parameters are 14.5% alcohol, pH of 3.49 and 4.87 grams of acidity. This is always the more complete wine here; it feels reticent, a little closed and shy, insinuating, nuanced and subtle. It has a seamless and solid palate with very fine tannins and a balanced mouthfeel. They expect to fill some 5,000 bottles in March 2024. (Luis Gutiérrez).

The gem in the crown of Álvaro Palacios, L'Ermita hails from a spectacular, north-facing vineyard with vines up to 110 years old. The wine is as evocative as the vineyard itself; beautifully wild, yet clearly defined. Ripe, earthy cherry and strawberry fruit, white pepper, wild flowers and just a touch of liquorice. There's an elegance and fluidity to the wine that is rare in Priorat, with such high ABV levels, but the star here is the flavour. Endless. A beautiful wine. 2026-2040.
