El grand vin del château propiedad de François-Xavier Borie muestra, una vez más, todo el potencial y la calidad de su terruño de origen. En esta añada 2024 cuenta con una proporción muy elevada de Cabernet sauvignon que define una vez más la identidad de su cuna y la finura de su expresión. Elegante, con una excelente madurez frutal y un notable frescura.

Ataque amplio y envolvente, textura sedosa y taninos finos. El equilibrio general ofrece una mezcla armoniosa de buena estructura, textura aterciopelada y vivacidad. Fiel al estilo de la casa, este refinado vino será accesible en su juventud y tendrá un gran potencial de envejecimiento.

Descripción
Viñedo alrededor del 'château'. El nombre Grand-Puy proviene del antiguo término "puy" que significa "montaña de pequeña altura" y así es el terruño en el que se asientan las cepas.

Muy profundo de gravas gruesas.
Clima
La añada 2024 demostró una vez más la capacidad de adaptación del equipo de viticultura para responder a condiciones climáticas difíciles e imprevisibles. La temporada estuvo marcada por un tiempo atípico, con un invierno suave que recordó al de 2020, lo que propició una brotación temprana y un ciclo vegetativo avanzado. A pesar del tiempo cambiante, la presión fitosanitaria se mantuvo bien controlada. Los rendimientos fueron satisfactorios y la calidad general de los frutos, excelente.

38 hectolitros por hectárea.
Cosecha
La vendimia se realizó manualmente del 25 de septiembre al 8 de octubre de 2024. Desde la bodega señalan el papel decisivo en la misma de sus equipos de vendimiadores españoles, "sobre todo en la selección precisa de las uvas de las viñas más jóvenes para garantizar una selección óptima".
Vinificación
Elaboración con la mínima intervención para preservar el perfil de la añada. La mezcla final se completó a principios de diciembre de 2024.
Envejecimiento
Crianza prevista en barricas de roble francés de grano fino (el 70% nuevas).

Opinión de los críticos

James Suckling:

A very classic Grand-Puy-Lacoste that’s really clear, firm and linear. Mineral, delicate, perfumed and bright, it shows scented red berries and a touch of white pepper. The medium body is rounded by fine, dusty tannins and a long, very juicy finish. 78% cabernet sauvignon and 22% merlot.

Decanter:

Grippy and cool, this has presence and focus in the mouth. Structured and chiselled with a cooling minty fresh acidity that drives the wine. Excellently displayed and presented, not rich but there's ripeness to the blackcurrant and plum fruit as well as purity and accents of smoke and cedar. Acidity is high giving extra tension but this isn't too sour or sharp. Needs some more time in oak to soften the edges but this has elegance. 70% new oak. (Georgina Hindle)

Falstaff:

Deep dark ruby, opaque core, purple reflections, delicate edge brightening. Black cherry, fine cassis, a hint of nougat, with candied orange zest in the background. Juicy, elegant, ripe berry fruit, finesse-rich structure, red berry aftertaste, delicate and persistent, fine ripe tannins, sure maturity and certain ageing potential. (Peter Moser)

Ce pauillac bien typé est doté d’une belle matière avec une pointe acidulée qui apporte une touche tonique à la finale. Joli fruit frais et souplesse des tanins, voilà un vin déjà très séduisant. (Olivier Poels)

As to the Grand Vin, the 2024 Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste is 78% Cabernet Sauvignon and 22% Merlot, resting in 70% new barrels. It's a classy, elegant Pauillac with ample red and black currant fruit as well as lead pencil, graphite, and some floral, spicy nuances. It's medium-bodied, balanced, has fine tannins, and tons of soul and charm. It will be a classic Pauillac, and I'd be happy to have bottles in my cellar.

Vinous:

Plump and juicy, the 2024 Grand-Puy-Lacoste is pure charm. This is an especially soft, fruity Grand-Puy-Lacoste with good aromatic presence and fine freshness, if not quite the depth or complexity of the very best years. Floral overtones lift the finish effortlessly. This is a delicate, understated Pauillac that will drink well with minimal cellaring. The balance between the 13% alcohol and 70% new oak is sublime. I won't be surprised if the 2024 turns out to be even better from bottle, especially if it gains a bit of mid-palate pliancy in barrel. (Antonio Galloni)

Tim Atkin:

Some smoky graphite and dry grained cassis fruit to scent. Juicy violet aspects on the palate with fresh acidity and crunchy tannins, all in good harmony. Juicy fresh forest fruit on the finish. This is a classic claret style in a vintage which really suits it. Lovely wine which will endure longer than most, but equally will be enjoyable in relative youth, around seven or eight years after release.
