Matsanko, meaning ‘bunch of grapes’ in Basque, comes from old vines in Dicastillo and Arellano. It is essentially a field blend of 85% Tempranillo 10% Garnacha and 5% Viura which are fermented together – whole bunch – with indigenous yeast in stainless steel. There is a short passage (five months) in used French oak but it doesn’t mark the wine. This is a bright and vibrant red, stylistically similar to carbonic maceration, with blueberry fruit and red cherries with a steely, graphite backbone. A spicy lift on the finish. 2024-27
The 2021 Matsanko was produced with a blend of 85% Tempranillo, 10% Garnacha and 5% Viura from an old, head-pruned and dry-farmed vineyard in the village of Dicastillo on sandstone soils. The grapes fermented with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel, and the wine matured in used French oak barrels for nine months. This is obviously different form the rest, as it feels more like Rioja, with blackberry fruit and licorice but with floral and expressive notes, moderate ripeness and 13.5% alcohol. It has a medium-bodied palate with a touch of earthiness. They want drinkable wines, so the search is for moderate alcohol and extraction; this wine fermented with full clusters and has changed to more Tempranillo. 1,740 bottles were filled in November 2022.
