The 2017 Leirana is pure Albariño, the only wine produced in stainless steel (with maybe 20% in oak foudre), with indigenous yeasts and with temperature control because it's the highest volume in the winery. In the future, they might ferment it in used oak foudres and keep it there for a few months, but that won't happen for another four or five years. Even if 2017 was warmer than 2016, the wine has lower alcohol. They try to improve this wine every year, and they have been adding grapes from some old vineyards they managed to buy that were not there in previous years. This 2017 feels very integrated—everything is in place. There are clean varietal aromas, serious, nothing tropical about it, and it has a strict, serious palate with some volume, perhaps helped by the foudre. I wish more Albariño was like this.
