For too long, Marqués de Vargas has been one of Rioja's under-achievers, but since the new winemaking team of Ana Barrón and Javier Ausás arrived it is finally fulfilling its potential. This is the estate's biggest volume wine and is an impressive introduction to the range, combining Tempranillo with 5% each of Garnacha and Mazuelo. Fresh and refined, with red fruit and aniseed notes, subtle wood and engaging purity and palate length. 2021-29
